Lilz: How old were you when you got into the music scene?
SneakerBox Chock: Actually, I've been writing rhymes since an early teen but, didn't take it to serious. It was just something I did to impress the females & to have the the lunch room rocking. I didn't fully understand my true music ability until like, 97 or 98.
Lilz: How did you get the name SneakerBox Chock?
SneakerBox Chock: Chock is short for Chocky, which is actually a nickname, giving to me by my father when I was around 3 or 4 years old. And, growing up people called me Chocky or Chock. SneakerBox is an expression of my sneaker addiction. I hate wearing the same pair of sneakers more than 2 or 3 times. My sneaker collection is definitely looking like Foot Locker's back stock room. So, a couple years ago I wrote a rhyme & called my self SneakerBox Chock cause it rhymed (Shrugging his shoulders w/ a slight cocky grin on his face) & that has been my name ever since.
Lilz: Who are some artists you would like to work with in the future?
SneakerBox Chock: Umm...anyone who knows me, knows that I am a fan of Joe Budden. So, I would definitely want to work w/ him. Actually, we were suppose to work together over the Summer of '09 but, the plan kinda fell thru. (Takes a breath & thinks for a couple seconds) Wishfully thinking, I'm going to say Kanye, Ghostface, Jim Jones, Alicia Keys & Erykah Badu. Just to name a few.
Lilz: Who are your influences?
SneakerBox Chock: I have alot of musical influences but, moreso life itself is my influence. I have travelled a difficult path in life, from my father leaving when I was very young. To selling drugs at the age of 14. To prison at the age of 18 for murder. To borderline alcoholism. To countless other things. So, having overcame those obstacles but, them still being embedded in me is my influence. To have been there & now be here, inspires me to strive & go further.
Lilz: Where do you see yourself in 10yrs?
SneakerBox Chock: I never know how to answer a question like this cause live changes so suddenly at times. If we look at Jay-Z, he is achieving things that i'm sure has superseded anything he could have thought 10 years ago he would have accomplished. So, I see myself being relevant. Wealthy. And, a household name w/ some kind of sneaker endorsement. Anything else, we'll just have to see...
Lilz: How do you feel about the music out today?
SneakerBox Chock: I have mixed feelings about it. I understand that w/ time brings change so, music today is definitely different than what I grew up listening to. Do I hate it? Not all of it. Do I like it? Not all of it. I think everything has it's place in the puzzle. We need one for the other to exist. So, the trash music is needed as well as the great music, which is what I make. Obvisouly (Smiles with that cocky grin again)!
Lilz: Have you ever had any major labels wanting to sign you?
SneakerBox Chock: A couple. I'm in the negotiating stage right now w/ a couple as we speak. I won't throw any names out there just yet. Don't wanna count my eggs before they hatch but, I will say this...the public is definitely about to see more of SneakerBox Chock.
Lilz: What camp or label are you with now? And how do you like it?
SneakerBox Chock: Screwface Music Group. Which is an indie label out of Camden, NJ overseen by Traxx Trigga & Devinwade. And, I don't like it...I LOVE IT!!! I've never been around such a super group of talented artist, producers & photographers. To put it simple...NO ONE, meaning an individual or group is seeing us musically. Actual fact.
Lilz: Other then rapping do you do anything else in music?
SneakerBox Chock: I executive produced my EP along w/ a few other mixtapes but, nah...other than that...I just rap my ass off.
Lilz: What advice would you give to up and coming artists now?
SneakerBox Chock: Well, this advice is for them & myself, cause i'm still an up & coming artist. Just continue to grind. Don't let anybody tell you that you can't make it. I have had family & friends tell me to give it up but, look at me now...I've sold 500+ units on iTunes 3 weeks in a row, in talks w/ major labels, having wonderful fans, Etc...if I would have listened to them I would have none of this right now. So keep grinding. And, get your music heard by anyone who is willing to listen.
